Large Giltwood Barometer From The Late 18th Century Signed Caduries, Rue De Bervi Faubg.
Artist: Canduries Paris
A simple and elegant Directoire-style giltwood barometer, known as a "Torricelli" barometer, made in the Faubourg Saint-Antoine district of Paris. Dating from the late 18th century, this curiosity is signed Canduries. Beautifully carved and with a patinated gilt finish, this piece features an elegant dial painted with a compass rose motif in sepia tones on a bluish-white background. Its finely cut hands indicate the time, and a gilt bronze wheel-shaped hand with an adjustable indicator serves as a weather marker. This is a high-quality piece, well-preserved over time. The complete mercury system with its glass tubes and pulley is still present on the back, along with a protective cover. It is a rare and highly decorative piece in the classical style. The large, whimsical bow adorns the headpiece; it is deeply pleated in a flowing, undulating shape. Beaded and reeded cartouches embellish the decoration, as does the beautiful dial, the generous thermometer filled with red alcohol, and above it, a finely detailed frame of supple, smooth reeding. In short, an important and useful piece for your wall, it will perfectly complement a Louis XVI style.
