The vinaigrette is made of vermeil (gilt silver), its body entirely decorated with a hand-crafted, swirling guilloché pattern.
Each end of the egg unscrews around the central section, which forms the grid. The larger compartment can hold the sponge or scented substance, and the smaller one allows the vinaigrette to be opened to release its aroma.
This decorative technique is typical of the late 18th century. The object's aesthetic suggests continental German production, but these small eggs are also attributed to English manufacture.
The egg is hallmarked with a swan, a later French hallmark.
A beautiful little object, particularly charming thanks to its shape and its three distinct openings.
