View of Toledo, Spain – Bridge over the Tagus (Puente de San Martín), circa 1935–1936
h 54 cm x w 66 cm
oil on canvas
original canvas and original stretcher
View of the historic city of Toledo, Spain, featuring its famous bridge over the Tagus River, identifiable as the Puente de San Martín, one of the city’s most iconic monumental entrances. The composition conveys the dry and luminous atmosphere of the Castilian landscape through a simplified painterly approach built with broad color planes and warm tones, typical of European interwar painting.
Signed lower right, signature partially legible.
On the reverse, an old handwritten label in French reads “Tolède – Pont sur le Tage”, with the date “1935/1936” and the name of an artist noted as Jacques (Paul) Fourestier; a further attribution note mentions “Jacques Fabrege”. These inscriptions should be considered as previous provenance and cataloguing annotations.
Overall in good condition, with a small area of paint loss in the lower part of the bridge.
