The drawing comes from the atelier of the painter Luigi Guglielmino (1885–1962), the principal pupil of Enrico Reffo (1831–1917), one of the leading figures of Piedmontese religious painting in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. After Reffo’s death, Guglielmino inherited his master’s studio, where not only his own works but also drawings, preparatory sketches and cartoons by Enrico Reffo and other members of the workshop were preserved.

The presence within this group of works signed by Enrico Reffo confirms that the atelier retained an important part of the master’s working material. This drawing belongs to that significant corpus and represents a valuable testimony to the academic tradition cultivated in the Turin workshop during the early decades of the twentieth century.
