Venice, Doge’s Palace — Albumen Photograph By P. Salviati, Piazzetta San Marco, C. 1880
Artist: Paolo Salviati (venezia, 1818 - 1894)
Antique albumen print mounted on its original period card.
The subject depicts the Doge’s Palace in Venice as seen from the Piazza San Marco, with the Column of the Lion of Saint Mark in the foreground.
Several animated figures, slightly blurred by the long exposure typical of the period, lend the scene a vivid documentary quality.
The print bears the title Pzo Ducale within the negative and the publisher’s stamp P. Salviati Venezia on the mount. A handwritten inscription in German at the lower margin — Dogenpalast in Venedig — documents provenance from a nineteenth-century German-speaking collector.
Paolo Salviati (Venice, 1818–1894) operated his Premiato Stabilimento Fotografico on the Piazza San Marco and is regarded as one of the most accomplished Venetian photographers of the later nineteenth century, a direct contemporary of Carlo Naya and Giorgio Sommer.
The print displays excellent tonal richness and architectural clarity — legible to the level of the Gothic crown sculptures of the palace.
The original card mount shows slight warping but no tears or foxing.
Image size: approx. 22 × 28 cm.
Card size: approx. 27 × 35 cm.
Dated circa 1875–1885.
