GENERAL'S SABER, Revolution. 32214. Gilt brass hilt. Single-branch guard molded in relief, with beaded edges, engraved with foliage. Long-tailed pommel similarly decorated to the guard branch, with a pommel in the shape of an antique helmet. Triangular quillons, the front quillon engraved with scrolls. Slightly curved, fullered Damascus blade, decorated on its first third in mirror polish and gilt with military trophies, bouquets of flowers, plumed helmets, fasces, ribbons, and scrolls. Blade length 79 cm, width at the ricasso 4 cm. Wooden scabbard covered in black waxed shagreen with three wide repoussé gilt brass mounts: The chape is repoussé on its front with a medallion depicting a republic against a background of military trophies within a laurel wreath tied at the top with a ribbon; this medallion is on a sandblasted background, surrounded by foliage corollas. At the top, a projecting molding borders the cup. A suspension ring. Height of the chape: 16.4 cm, width: 6.5 cm. The central decoration on its front face is the same as that of the chape, except for the repoussé medallion of a fasces wearing a Phrygian cap against a background of a trophy of arms. Height: 8.3 cm, width: 6.5 cm. The scabbard tip is similarly repoussé but on both sides, with a central medallion on each side depicting a fasces wearing a Phrygian cap against a background of a military trophy. Gilt brass lyre-shaped chape. Height of the scabbard tip: 21.5 cm, width: 5.5 cm. France. Revolutionary period. Excellent condition, suspension ring peg on the scabbard chape is broken but complete.
