"Bathiyari Salt Pouch - Persia. Circa 1880. 52 X 33 Cm"
Salt bags, commonly called Namakdan in Farsi and Tuzluk in Turkish, are everyday objects once used by the nomadic populations of Persia. They most often come from productions attributed to the Lori or Bathiyari peoples. This one is Bathiyari, late 19th century. There are many copies made since the 1970s, often very poor imitations. Salt was of vital importance, both for people and for the animals that accompanied the nomads on their travels. Salt bags are true works of art, fascinating for their precious appearance and characteristic shapes. It is extremely rare to find them complete with their carrying handles. Front in Sumak technique. Woven back. Wool on wool. Vegetable dyes. Circa 1880-1900. Perfect condition. Dimensions: 52 x 33 cm. Laurent Beauty of Kilims
