Inkwell/writing Table - Samson Werthheimer - Gilt Bronze - Hardstones - 19th Century
Artist: Samson Wertheimer
A gilt and chased bronze inkwell with cabochon-cut hardstones (agates, carnelians, etc.). Shaped like a stirrup, this inkwell, a model of which was presented at the Great Exhibition in London in 1862, is characteristic of the production of the London firm Samson Wertheimer, which specialized in luxury objects often embellished with cabochon-cut hardstones. Note the fine chasing of the gilt bronze and the quality of the hardstones, which are in perfect condition. It retains its original crystal ink reservoir. The underside is lined with velvet. Unsigned, but a documented model. Period: circa 1862/1870. Excellent original condition (no damage or restoration). Length: 24.2 cm Width: 14.9 cm Height: 13.2 cm
