Sterling Silver Inkwell, Charles Wright – London 1770 (george III)
Rare sterling silver desk inkwell, composed of a circular base finely chased with vegetal motifs, adorned with winged cherub heads and a gadrooned border.
The central bowl, in blown glass, is encased in a silver mount richly decorated with floral patterns.
The lid, of particular refinement, is surmounted by a fully modelled monkey in solid silver: an unusual and sophisticated detail that gives the piece its uniqueness and character.
Under the base are the hallmarks:
- CW – Charles Wright, master silversmith
- Lion passant – guarantee of sterling silver 925/1000
- Crowned leopard’s head – mark of the city of London
- Date letter “P” – year 1770
Inside the lid is an additional hallmark: the lion passant.
