Triptych-reliquary ("ex Ossibus") In Mahogany, Interior: Work Of Nuns, 17th Century Spain
Triptych reliquary/devotional casket, probably Spain or Portugal, 17th century. A dark-finished, ebony-like wooden casket, constructed as a triptych that opens. Two side panels with original hinges and wrought-iron fittings, decorated inside with polychrome representations of saints on paper (engravings) protected by glass. Central panel: A large field of relics under glass, richly adorned with decorative compositions in textile threads (silk and gold thread embroidery), incorporating small fragments of relics: "Saint Andrew, Saint Paul, Saint Peter, Saint Thomas, Saint Joanna, Saint Antonius, Saint Philip," accompanied by handwritten notes. In the center, an oval representation of Saint Thomas (colored engraving). The wings, hinged with wrought iron and fire-gilt, house under glass two enhanced (colored) engravings representing "PETRUS DE ALCANTARA" signed "GMUYS" and "ANTONIUS DE PADUA". The surface of the two closed wings is inlaid with bone engraved with a cruciform design, bordered by rocaille and fleur-de-lis, flanked by two trilobed spirals, probably signifying the Holy Trinity? The four sides of the triptych are also inlaid with small rectangular bone fillets. As is (wear).
