Antique Stauroteca, Reliquary Cross, Relic Of The Holy Cross – Venice, 18th Century -h.40 Cm

This object is a stunning and extremely rare tabletop reliquary cross, a fine example of sacred art dating approximately to the mid-18th century.Object Characteristics: Materials and Craftsmanship: The body of the cross and the stepped pyramidal base are embellished with mirrored glass inserts (often referred to as mercury mirrors) decorated with elegant glass appliqués featuring geometric and floral motifs;the edges are outlined by very fine glass appliqués, typical of the Venetian region. The ends of the arms and the upper cornice feature carved and gilded wooden volutes typical of the Baroque and Rococo styles. Function: At the center of the cross, where the arms intersect, is an oval glass case containing a silver reliquary of the Cross of Christ. The combination of mirrored surfaces and gilded details fully reflects the dramatic aesthetic of the Baroque era, designed to reflect and multiply the light of candles during liturgical services or within private chapels.
The stauroteca is in excellent condition and is original in all parts.
The internal relic is sealed with an original wax seal, featuring ground glass or crystal and a solid silver structure with intricate detailing.
