"Pierre Forest 1881-1971 - Great Impressionist - Sailboats In The Mediterranean At Sunset"
A large and powerful Impressionist painting from the 1920s-1930s depicting a luminous Mediterranean landscape with fishing boats bathed in the glow of the setting sun. The work is signed by the painter Pierre Forest (1881-1971), an excellent artist to whom the Bénézit dictionary devotes a substantial chapter and whose biography can be found on Wikipedia. Born in Nice, he exhibited in 1923 at the Terrise Gallery on Boulevard Haussmann in Paris, and then from 1924 to 1929 at the Reitlinger Gallery on Rue La Boétie. His canvases were regularly exhibited at the Salon des Indépendants from 1931 to 1943. He also exhibited in South America, Switzerland, and Morocco. In 1981, a major retrospective exhibition of his work was presented by the city of Nice. Note: one of the attractions of the work offered here is that it belongs to the artist's best period. (1920-1930) when he created works "with a palette knife": during this period, the luminosity and impasto of his colors became very characteristic of the Impressionists of the Provençal school. A simple comparison of this painting with those visible on Google Images reveals that it is objectively among the most beautiful and chromatically powerful... - restoration is planned to correct a small tear (a minor detail), some losses along the edges, and traces of old varnish here and there; fairly basic corrections.
