Sparkling Polychrome Lacquer And Mother-of-pearl Powder Box, Japan, 18th Century

Beautiful black lacquer powder box, its exterior surfaces entirely inlaid with fine mother-of-pearl marquetry in shimmering colors, a technique secretized by Japan—the famous Nagasaki lacquers.
This box must have been commissioned from France; the features of charming shepherdess, her golden curls, her sheep, and her bagpipes must have captivated Japanese artists.
This curious, luminous marquetry seems to come alive depending on angle of light, shifting from pink to green or gray.
10cm x 5.5cm.
Good overall condition, with signs of wear consistent with age, and minor damage and losses on marquetry, especially underside of box. The lacquered interior is very clean.
