Folk Art, Italian Patriotic Object, Napoleon And Josephine, Empire Period
Artist: Art Populaire
An amusing example of patriotic devotion dating from the First French Empire.
Thepiece consists of a black cardboard frame decorated in the Venetian manner withsmall mirrors bordered by gilt straw work. At its centre is a small anonymouspopular print depicting the Imperial couple, attractively enhanced withwatercolour. Beneath the portraits appear biographical inscriptions and a grandcoat of arms incorporating a closed imperial crown, a green mantle lined withermine, a collar composed of various regional shields, and the insignia of theLegion of Honour.
Theprint appears to be very rare and differs from all the comparable examples, although numerous, that I have been able to locate in the available referencematerial.
The likely explanation lies in the coat of arms depicted beneath thecouple: it is imaginary, showing certain similarities to the arms of theKingdom of Italy, yet bearing no real correspondence to those of the FrenchEmpire.
Frame dimensions: 23 × 18 cm.Print dimensions: 15.5 × 11 cm.
Theprint is in good condition. The frame is somewhat less well preserved, thoughrestoration would be both straightforward and enjoyable. The central glasspanel, two mirror strips, and a small amount of the straw decoration aremissing and would need to be recreated during restoration.
