Turned Boxwood, Kitchen Churn, Beautiful, Louis Philippe Period
Artist: Art Populaire
Sorry, no export airmail for this,
A marvelous kitchen tool, fine piece of hand-turned woodworking, dating from first half of 19th century.
It features a beautiful rotating handle mechanism that drives a pin system and a rotating barrel. The craftsmen knew their craft: choice of woods—boxwood for superstructure, cherry for flat parts = absence of wormholes on frame.
It includes a blown glass container for monitoring butter level, and the adjustment of elements is achieved via wooden screws. Nothing is missing; it's magnificent.
Almost all the parts can be disassembled like a toy. It's in good condition, it turns and can be used, but requires some adjustments, such as removing the butterfly button from the flail first to disassemble the lower section.
One problem: one or two boxwood columns have warped over time (red arrow).
It would be necessary to either straighten them using a hot-and-damp method, as was done in the past, or spend time adjusting all the wooden screws by compensating for warping and shimming them more precisely than I have done.
Dimensions: H 48cm x 32cm, 3.2kg.
