Jean Marembert. Oil on canvas "Rodez, its Cathedral and the Corbières Tower," signed lower right Marembert. Countersigned on the back of the canvas J. Marembert with the artist's address inscribed: 9 rue Campagne Première, Paris XIV. French School. 73.8 x 92.5 cm. Jean Marembert (1900-1968) exhibited at the Salon des Indépendants from 1929. Connected to the literary circles of his time, he gradually adopted the Surrealist style championed by his writer friends. The Musée d'Art Moderne de Paris holds several of his works. This painting is an early work dating from 1920-25, and its classical style nevertheless foreshadows a future evolution. Waxed oak frame. Two small imperfections in the upper left and upper right corners of the sky. Some shrinkage of paint in the foliage. Needs cleaning. Good overall condition. 950 euros.
