Hungarian School. Oil on canvas Várrom, the castle ruins, signed “Koszeghy” in the lower right corner. Hungarian School. 70.5 x 100 cm. Bears a label on the back from a state gallery or auction house from the early 20th century that provides the title of the work.
Elemer Koszeghy (1882–1954) was a student at the Budapest School of Drawing (Austria-Hungary).
Koszeghy became director of the Museum of Decorative Arts in Budapest.
He is particularly renowned for painting excellent landscapes of the Tatra Mountains (a rugged mountain range located on the border between Poland and present-day Slovakia).
After World War I, the painter stayed in Tatraszéplak (now Tatranska Polianka), a mountain resort at the foot of the Tatra Mountains.
Koszeghy wore two hats: he was not only a painter but also a distinguished archaeologist, restorer of medieval churches, and historian of ancient monuments. He had a professional and artistic fascination with historical ruins, which he loved to incorporate into his compositions.
This painting is a brilliant testament to Koszeghy’s talent; his works are often characterized by remarkable atmospheric effects, as seen in this powerfully contrasting stormy sky.
