Charles Fouqueray, "captain Of The Mounted Hunters, Jean De Milly"
Artist: Charles Dominique Fouqueray
Charles Dominique Fouqueray, “Captain of the Mounted Chasseurs Jean de Milly,” signed and dated in the lower right corner: D. Charles Fouqueray 1910, and inscribed and countersigned in the upper right corner: “To my gallant friend Jean de Milly, with warmest regards, Charles Fouqueray.” 55.4 x 32.4 cm. French School.
Charles Dominique Fouqueray (1869–1956) was a student of Alexandre Cabanel (1823–1889) and Fernand Cormon (1845–1924) at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris.
Fouqueray began exhibiting at the Salon des Artistes Français in 1889 and presented his paintings at the 1900 World’s Fair.
The artist was appointed official painter to the Navy in 1908.
Drawing on his deep connection to the sea, he traveled the seas and coastlines: commissioned to document the coastline during World War I, he later traveled to the Middle East and made several trips to the Arabian Peninsula in the 1920s and 1930s.
From these missions—marked by prestigious commissions from the French Navy on the themes of pilgrimages and the Red Sea coast—he returned with a rich and exotic body of work.
Our painting depicts Jean de Milly in the uniform of a captain of the Mounted Chasseurs, attached to a general staff and wearing the Legion of Honor.
The House of Milly is an ancient family whose roots stretch far back into French history and the history of the Crusades in the East.
Modern wooden frame with gilded stucco. Good condition.
900 euros.
