Willem Kalf (1619-1693) no longer needs to be introduced to art lovers, and his pronkstilleven (ceremonial still lifes), where luxury and exoticism are masterfully depicted, feature on the picture rails of the world's greatest museums.
The young Kalf moved to Paris around the age of twenty, joining a small community of artists who were already enlivening Saint-Germain-des-Prés with their talent. He stayed for several years.
During this period, the young painter developed a passion for small French kitchens and old barns used as pantries, creating a whole series of interior scenes. These were soon recognized by his colleagues, who began to imitate them.
Our painting, which dates from this period, is a perfect example of the fashion that the young Kalf initiated in Saint-Germain-des-Prés.
