Georges Maury, "bacchanal By The Water"
Artist: Georges Sauveur Maury
Georges Sauveur Maury. Oil on canvas, “Bacchanalia by the Water,” signed lower right: G. Maury. 57.5 x 77 cm. French School.
Georges Sauveur Maury (1872–1960) was a student of Ferdinand Humbert (1842–1934) and Ernest Quost (1842–1931).
He gained international recognition by participating in exhibitions in Scotland, the United States of America, and Denmark. With Ernest Quost, in particular, he learned to capture ambient light on canvas. Using his palette with dexterity and gentle harmony, he created landscapes and Orientalist scenes as well as historical compositions.
Our painting is a perfect synthesis of Georges Maury’s talent. Through a myriad of delicate brushstrokes, the painter succeeds in capturing the fleeting nature of an offering to Bacchus, the Roman god of intoxication. How many artists are capable of such a feat?
Unframed. Good condition.
