Orientalist school militaria. Oil on mahogany panel, "The Guard of the Algerian Rifleman," signed lower left A. Chigot. French School. 41.5 x 31.5 cm (56.5 x 48.5 cm overall). Charles Alphonse Chigot (1824-1917) was born in Graçay (Indre), a student of Julien Potier (1796-1865), and worked in Valenciennes (Hauts-de-France). He exhibited at the Salon of the Société des Artistes Français. He participated in the African campaign and fought at the Battle of Isly (Oued Isly, Morocco) in 1844. Alphonse Chigot was the father of Eugène Chigot (1860-1923). Our painting depicts one of the first Algerian riflemen. Note the presence of a red circle on his bolero, labeled "Tomb," which corresponds to this period. Furthermore, the soldier wears the Crimean War Medal and the Far East Medal on his breastplate (source: Clément Laudat, expert). Period gilt wood and stucco frame. Good condition. 1100 euros
