"Attributed To François Marius Granet "an Old Capuchin Is Distressed By The Dilapidation Of His Convent""
François Marius Granet attributed to. Oil on canvas "an old Capuchin laments the dilapidation of his convent" unsigned. French school. 65 X 54 cm. On the back of the canvas, stamp of the paint merchant P. Soult et fils, 18 rue du Louvre (to be confirmed). François Marius Granet (1775-1849) was a student of Jacques Louis David (1748-1825). At the very end of the 18th century, he lived for a time in a cell of the disused Capuchin convent in Paris. After this experience, his profession was oriented almost exclusively towards this monastic world, which was then in disuse. Granet quickly enjoyed significant success. Our painting dates from the very end of the 18th century or the very beginning of the 19th. At the time, in Paris, paint merchants, who also sold canvases and frames, were mostly located on rue du Louvre. Please note, dear lovers of beautiful paintings, these few scattered touches of pure green color that materialize the ambient mold that is eating away at the convent and which are the trademark of the Aix painter and also these small touches of pink and blue colors, improbable, that we find on the walls. And this small bouquet of germinating flowers that has grafted itself onto a small stony projection that benefits from the rays of the sun and the water that the soaring roof lets through. Here is yet another proof of the quality of our painting. Period gilded wooden frame. Some small old restorations. Good general condition. 4800 euros.
