Icon of Christ Pantocrator
Russia, late 19th century
Tempera on levkas, brass oklad (stamped and openwork)
Wooden panel with two cross-bars
Dimensions: approx. 35 × 30 cm
An icon depicting Christ Pantocrator, shown blessing and holding the open Gospel with the traditional text: “Come unto Me, all you who labour…”.
The image is covered with a richly decorated brass oklad, featuring an openwork halo and finely worked floral and geometric motifs.
The painting of the face, hands, and garments is characteristic of late 19th-century Russian workshop production, with a vivid palette and restrained modelling.
Condition: overall good condition; old craquelure and small losses of the paint layer in areas previously covered by the oklad, age-related wear; stable panel.
Note: a slight deformation is present along the upper edge of the oklad’s halo, without affecting the visual integrity of the icon.
A decorative and representative example of 19th-century Russian icon painting, combining quality execution with an elaborately crafted oklad.
