- Strasbourg, circa 1690
- Height: 5 cm; length (to the handles): 16.2 cm; diameter: 11.4 cm; weight: 179 g
- Very good condition, gilt uniformly worn
- Provenance: Private collection of Dr. G.
- The circular gilt cup rests on a gadrooned foot. The upper rim is decorated with a molding and fillets, the lower part of the body is matte, delimited by a double fillet. The cut-out handles are console-shaped.
- These cups with a matte body, known as "Schlangenhaut" or snakeskin, are a constant feature of German production at the end of the 17th century. Beyond cups, this decoration is also found on goblets and gondola cups. This decoration appears to be a Strasbourg specialty, as mentioned in the post-mortem inventory of the Parisian goldsmith Jean Descourtieux in 1724: "cup in gondola style, Strasbourg" (sic).
