Anthonore Christensen (Denmark, 1849–1926)
Still Life with Flowers and Ears of Corn Signed lower right: “A. Christensen, Rocca di Lupo, 1886”

Oil on canvas, 38 × 50 cm.

This refined composition is a masterful example of the pictorial sensibility of Anthonore Christensen, an important and delicate Danish painter specializing in still lifes—particularly floral ones, a theme she deeply cherished throughout her career.
In this work, executed during a stay in Italy and signed “Rocca di Lupo, 1886,” the artist arranges with a great sense of balance an abundant bowl of peaches and grapes in the foreground, alongside an elegant rustic vase from which blooming roses and lush foliage rise.
On the right, two half-open ears of corn add a pastoral and luminous touch, naturally balancing the scene.

Trained at the Copenhagen Academy, Christensen developed a refined and sensitive pictorial language. She spent considerable time in Italy, particularly in the central and southern regions, where she loved to paint en plein air.
True to the spirit of plein air painting, she often worked outdoors, easel in hand, carefully observing the plant world and translating it into works vibrant with life, naturalness, and chromatic harmony.
This canvas, dated 1886, is a particularly successful example of her art: an elegant and richly detailed still life, fully revealing her ability to capture the silent poetry of nature.
