Gold, Silver, Diamond, And Pearl Pendant With A Double Miniature. Spain, 19th Century
An exceptional double-sided pendant, crafted in finely chased gold and silver, enhanced with small rose-cut diamonds and a delicate row of tiny natural pearls.
The setting, a testament to the goldsmith's virtuosity, features a rich decoration of foliate motifs, garlands, and festoons, punctuated by small flowers that add refinement and movement to the whole. In its upper section, the ornamentation is structured around a curved architectural motif, set with rose-cut diamonds and surmounted by floral elements. At the center stands a pearl, highlighted as a focal point, surrounded by scrolls, branches, and rosettes that lend the composition a sumptuously ornamental character, typical of the Neoclassical style.
On one side, a delicate oval miniature depicts a young penitent, likely Mary Magdalene, in a moment of profound contemplation, near a skull, a symbol of vanity, and an open book. The other side depicts a tender image of the sleeping Christ Child, resting on a cushion and holding a small cross, a prefiguration of the Passion.
A remarkable piece, both for the quality of its metalwork and the delicacy of its miniatures, this pendant testifies to the refined craftsmanship of 19th-century Spanish goldsmithing.
