A rare and superb oval plaque featuring a bust of Louis XIV, wearing a large curled wig, a lace jabot, and a royal ermine mantle strewn with fleurs-de-lis. The King wears the blue ribbon and the insignia of the Order of the Holy Spirit. The dark brown background highlights the complexion and the sheen of the fabrics. The composition reproduces the official iconography of the sovereign, after the large portrait by Hyacinthe Rigaud (1701). The plaque is presented in a rich oval frame decorated with gilt scrolls and palmettes.
