Pierre Comba was born in Nice in 1859 and died there in 1934. Born to a painter father, he moved to Paris in the early 1880s and enrolled at the École des Beaux-Arts under the tutelage of Jean-Léon Gérôme. He became an official painter for the French army. Upon returning to Nice, he obtained permission from the General Staff to follow the maneuvers of the Alpine Chasseurs and depict them in their daily lives. It was in the art of watercolor that he fully expressed his talent. The dimensions of the painting, including the frame, are 36.5 cm x 56 cm.
