Pair Of Vases, Fukagawa - Koransha, Arita - Imari, Japan, Meiji Period (1868-1912).

A pair of imposing vases in hand-painted and gilded porcelain. The meticulously executed decorations depict, within cartouches, scenes with chrysanthemum flowers (kiku) and butterflies, and on the other side, baskets with peony flowers (botan) and a cherry blossom (sakura). The space outside the cartouches is filled with various ornaments featuring vegetal, geometric, or wavy motifs.

Arita - Imari, Japan, Meiji era (1868-1912). Fukagawa-Koransha Company signature on the background: Mount Fuji and a stream.

Fukagawa - The company's history begins with Ezaiemon Fukagawa, who opened a factory in Arita Prefecture in 1856, which he renamed the Koransha Company in 1875. At the 1900 Paris Exposition, it won a gold medal for a large flower vase. Artists working for the company include the designer Kinsaku Ide and the sculptor Toshi Ninomiya.
