Set Of Eight Revolutionary-era Puppets
A rare set of eight puppets from the Revolutionary period, circa 1780–1790, featuring carved and polychrome wooden heads, each with an expressive physiognomy: painted beards, rosy cheeks, emphasized eyes, and individualized faces. The headdresses and textile elements are original, made from fragments of fine fabrics—lace, velvet, ribbons—most likely from noble clothing, reused in the spirit of popular theater at the end of the Ancien Régime and the beginning of the Revolution. The heads now rest on later turned wooden stands, allowing for a vertical and uniform presentation while highlighting their sculptural character. A beautiful, coherent, and highly decorative set of great rarity, bearing witness to the society theater and satirical culture of the Revolutionary period.
