"Exotic Scene"
Ink and wash drawingThis type of composition refers to the representations of “Savages” very fashionable in Baroque Europe. After the great voyages (America, Africa, Asia), Italian, French and Flemish artists multiplied the so-called “exotic” scenes, populated by idealized figures supposed to represent the peoples of the New World. The ostriches and fantastic birds evoke the exotic animals described in the stories of missionaries and travelers.
