Louis-vincent Fouquet (1803–1863) - A Peasant's Daily Life
Oil on canvas, signed and dated 1834, depicting a scene of rural life. A young mother holding her child stands in front of a farmhouse, while two young boys play with a hen and her chicks. In the background, a donkey sheltered under a lean-to completes this scene of everyday peasant life, observed with great accuracy.
This work is by Louis-Vincent Fouquet (1803–1863), a French painter trained in the studio of Jean-Victor Bertin. He exhibited regularly at the Paris Salon beginning in the 1820s and distinguished himself through his landscapes as well as his genre scenes inspired by rural life.
Dated 1834, this painting was created at a time when artists were showing a growing interest in the French countryside. Under the July Monarchy, genre painting experienced a veritable boom and celebrated the rural world, its traditions, and its way of life. A few years before the emergence of the Barbizon School and the realism of Jean-François Millet, Louis-Vincent Fouquet offers here a sensitive portrayal of daily life on French farms.
