Frédérik Rohde trained at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen between 1830 and 1834, with history painter Lund and landscape painters Kobke and Büntzen. He himself specialized in landscapes, continuing the spirit of the Golden Age of Danish painting; he was present at the Exposition Universelle in Paris in 1855, and counted Vilhelm Hammershoi among his pupils.
He was born in Germany.
It was to Germany that Rohde made his first trip in 1842, being based in Munich until 1847. During this stay he made trips to Switzerland and Italy, painting sites on Italy's great lakes, principally Como and Garda.
Rohde's work was also very popular in Italy.
Aside from numerous snow landscapes, the bulk of his work consists of views of Italy, where he would travel regularly until the end of his life.
But his native land also remained a recurring subject for him, with depictions of winter landscapes and traditional Danish country life. Here it's almost a photograph he offers, with this young boy posing proudly beside his cart, in front of the white thatched walls typical of Danish farms.
