"Bronze Candle Holder, Transitional Renaissance / Louis XIII Period"
Renaissance / Louis XIII PeriodThis rare model of bronze candlestick seems to belong to the transition period between the two styles around the years 1580-1630. Elements reminiscent of the Renaissance: The general squat and massive shape Renaissance candlesticks often have a wide and very stable base, like this one. The shaft is relatively thick, which is a trait still inherited from the models of the 16th century. Elements that rather evoke the Louis XIII style (early 17th century): Slender shaft with soft and rounded moldings The shapes of the shaft are less angular than those typical of the Renaissance and begin to become more slender and fluid, a transition towards the Baroque. We see an influence of the baluster, very common under Louis XIII. Note: consolidation welds between the shaft and the base.
