Rat Merchant
Artist: Anonyme
Red chalk depicting a street vendor holding his pole and satchel, wearing a long coat and hat. Anonymous work that attempts to capture a picturesque figure of the common people of the 18th century. The rat merchant (or “rat hunter”) captured the rodents that infested houses, attics, warehouses or bakeries. He often presented himself with a large pole, at the end of which hung a cage or net, and carried a satchel filled with bait. Some also sold live rats for scientific experiments, rat dog demonstrations, or even popular games in taverns or fairs. Dimensions of the red chalk: 15.5 cm x 8.5 cm Dimensions with frame: 23.5 cm x 18.5 cm
