Artist: Jean Huber Dit Huber-voltaire
Oil on prepared sepia paper, framed, under glass, depicting a study of a horse.
Attributed to Jean Hubert, a close friend of Voltaire to the point of being nicknamed Huber-Voltaire. Jean Huber, a Genevan painter born in Chambéry in 1721 and died in Lausanne in 1786, first made a name for himself as a silhouette cutter and caricaturist. He enjoyed great success in Geneva.
Numerous cutouts of Voltaire are known to him, whom he frequented regularly after the philosopher settled in Geneva, first at Les Délices in 1756, then in Ferney.
The critic Melchior Grimm, who appreciated his talent, introduced him to Parisians. Huber began painting as a self-taught artist in the mid-1760s.
His early paintings depicted horses and hunting scenes, particularly falconry. From 1769 onwards, he painted numerous pictures depicting Voltaire in his daily life (including Voltaire playing chess with Father Adam).
Huber also produced several self-portraits in pastel, including the one held at the Lausanne Historical Museum.
He was also interested in ballooning and wrote books on this subject and on the flight of birds.
