Harvest at the Foot of the Mountains
Oil on canvas
H. 26.5 cm; W. 44.5 cm
Circa 1845
Born into a family of magistrates, Pierre-Gustave Giradon was a student of his fellow Lyonnais, Nicolas-Victor Fonville. Exclusively a landscape painter, he primarily created views of the Rhône Valley, Provence, and the Mediterranean coast, which he exhibited at the Paris Salon between 1857 and 1873, as well as in Lyon, Marseille, and Montpellier, among other places. His style is similar to that of landscape painters of Corot's generation, such as Lapito, Fleury, and Caruelle d'Aligny. The artist, who did not need to paint to live, was based in the Drôme, near Crest, and it is possible that our painting represents a harvest scene in a plain at the foot of the Pre-Alps.
