A student of Horace Vernet, Lambinet quickly turned to landscape painting, influenced by the masters of the Barbizon School, particularly Camille Corot, with whom he was close. His works are characterized by a keen sensitivity to light, a meticulous rendering of nature, and a deep interest in rural scenes. He worked primarily in the Île-de-France region, painting the banks of the Seine and the countryside around Bougival, Marly-le-Roi, and his hometown, Versailles. Lambinet excelled at capturing the peaceful atmosphere of the 19thcentury French countryside. His work is now represented in several public collections, notably at the Musée Lambinet in Versailles, which bears his name.

In this painting dated 1849, Émile Lambinet depicts a bucolic harvest scene at the edge of a forest, perfectly embodying the naturalist aesthetic of the mid-19thcentury. Two women and a child are bent over in a golden field of wheat, focused on their grueling task. The golden light of the wheat contrasts harmoniously with the deep shadow of the forest in the background. This contrast creates an intimate and almost theatrical scene, emphasized by the natural frame formed by the trees and the opening to the sky in the center. This effect is further highlighted by the spandrels that the original frame would have concealed.

Two years later, Lambinet revisited this composition in a larger format, which was sold several times during the 20th century.
