Circa 1915

Trained notably by Laurits Tuxen and Gustav Vermehren, Edward Olund-Hansen entered the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen in 1911. He exhibited at the Charlottenborg Salon from 1917 to 1976. Our painting corresponds to the intimate interior views, with marked chiaroscuro effects, that he produced at the beginning of his career, and which obviously recall the compositions of Hammershøi or Carl Holsoe, in which a single figure, lit by a soft Nordic light, often has their back to the viewer. With the discovery of the island of Bornholm (off the coast of Scania, Sweden, in the Baltic Sea), where he spent his summers from 1920 onwards, Olund-Hansen moved towards landscape painting, with a luminous and colorful palette, while retaining the broad brushstroke already present in our painting.
