A beautifully executed painting on wood panel, depicting a priest or monk.
The painting was made during the 19th century, this was confirmed from analysis of the paint.
On further discussion with my expert and restorer, the painting was likely done to fool some wealth gentleman and collector. Since Bol’s surviving works are rare I am certain some wonderful and elaborate story would have accompanied the piece. The addition of several stamps on the back of the board is also a very nice and authentic touch, with some having malformed making them illegible. The main seal read, Brussel’s consulate and I think they all give the piece a realm of authenticity.
While the piece was created with more sinister intentions, we cannot deny that the execution shows the artists mastery.
Bol who studied under Rembrandt, specialised in painting portraits and historical subjects. In his earlier career, he imitated Rembrandt’s style so precisely that some of his works were mistaken for Rembrandt’s. Many very similar portraits can be found in museums and this is executed flawlessly like the works of master himself.
