16th Century Venetian Admirals Axe
This superbly rare and finely carved Venetian Admirals command axe, which is chiselled with grotesque imagery and rarely seen.
These kind of commander weapons would have been used to command and launch attacks as well as serve the same purpose of a fighting and boarding axe. These axes were the primary weapon for close combat as it was one of the most integral tools and weapons of any navy for both fighting in confined decks as well to cutting ropes, etc.
By far the venetian navy was the most superior and experienced force with its highly skilled sailors and soldiers, they also like most states utilised highly experienced Mercenaries in conflicts to boost their ranks. Not many such axes survive to this day and without a doubt this was made for a high ranking commander of importance.
The axe itself is in excellent condition and was crafted with expert precision by one of the famous smiths in the period. The imagery which included the Lion of Venice, and several demonic and grotesque demons.
