Spanish School (c. 1630) - San Pedro De Alcántara

Oil on relined canvas. The Spanish mystic Saint Peter of Alcántara, celebrated for his profound erudition and rigorous asceticism, as well as for his close relationship with Saint Teresa of Ávila, is depicted in this portrait with striking austerity. His imposing figure emerges from the dimness of his cell, a stark space that contrasts sharply with the formal complexity of court painting during the reign of Philip III. The artist achieves an almost expressionistic intensity, where the austerity of the setting amplifies the subject's devotion: the books are reduced to square volumes on a skeletal shelf, and the chair on which the religious figure rests is a minimalist piece of furniture. This authentic and powerful work testifies forcefully to the eloquence and introspective intensity of Spanish art in the first quarter of the 17th century. Dimensions of the image without frame: 81 x 91 cm / 92 x 103 cm with antique raw wood frame.
