- In the work of Spanish photographer Alexis W., voyeurism sheds its purely transgressive connotations to become a tool for sociological and anthropological investigation of rare acuity. Through his iconic project La Ventana Indiscreta (Rear Window)—a deliberate nod to Hitchcock’s masterpiece—the artist explores the constant tension between the public sphere and privacy by displaying portraits, notably male nudes, on balconies in urban settings. This “reversed” or consensual “voyeurism” invites passersby to transgress the boundaries of traditional modesty, transforming the viewer’s gaze into an accomplice in a ritual of observation. By capturing moments of vulnerability, desire, and the deconstruction of identity, Alexis W.’s work uses the intrusive gaze not as a tool of intrusion, but as a poetic mirror aimed at questioning our own taboos and the theatricality of our most secret desires.
