Object description :

"Reliquary Of The Passion Of Christ, Rome, 18th Century"
Reliquary of the Passion of Christ and the Apostles, Italy 18th century, 11 relics under glass, episcopal seal intact.

Description

Superb oval reliquary in openwork gilt copper, in rocaille style, containing an exceptional set of eleven relics of the Passion of Christ and the holy Apostles, presented under convex glass on a crimson silk background, decorated with golden paperolles and twisted threads.
In the center, the Cross (Ex Ligno S. Crucis DNJC) is surrounded by ten relics identified by Latin handwritten labels:
1. Ex Lancea Dñi – of the Lance of the Lord
2. Ex Sudario Dñi – of the Holy Shroud
3. Ex Spongia Dñi – of the Sponge of the Passion
4. De Mensa Dñi – of the Table of the Last Supper
5. De Fune Dñi – of the Rope of Christ
6. De Cuna Dñi – of the Crib of the Lord
7. S. Petri Ap. – of the Holy Apostle Peter
8. S. Pauli Ap. – of the Holy Apostle Paul
9. S. Marci Ev. – of Saint Mark the Evangelist
10. S. Lucae Ev. – of Saint Luke the Evangelist

The whole is finely composed in a decoration of gilded paperolles (rolled threads and floral motifs), typical of Roman religious workshops of the 18th century.

The relics are perfectly in place, held by the original red silk threads.

The reverse retains its episcopal seal in red wax, intact, with the silk cords sealed, guaranteeing the integrity and ecclesiastical authenticity of the reliquary.

The coat of arms visible in the wax is characteristic of Roman productions of the late 18th century.
