Kusakabe Kimbei, Original Albumen Print Of Children, Japan, Ca. 1880
Artist: Kusakabe Kimbei (1841-1934)
After working as an assistant and colourist for Raimund von Stillfried and Felice Beato, Kusakabe Kimbei founded his own photographic studio in Yokohama in the early 1880s.
An expert in staging and watercolour enhancement, he gave his images a chromatic intensity and elegance that appealed to Western travellers wishing to take home a souvenir of Japan. In this studio photograph, two young girls dressed in traditional clothing carry children in front of a painted backdrop depicting a Japanese landscape, contributing to a picturesque representation of the country.
Albumen print, 24 × 19cm, mounted on cardboard and enhanced with watercolour, circa 1880.
Good condition.
