The image features a series of raised wooden platforms, characteristic of kawayuka or noryoyuka, traditional riverside restaurants. Several people, mainly women in kimono, are seated on these platforms. In the foreground, three women pose on a balcony-like structure, one holding a fan, the other two seated beside her. The background depicts the riverbank with buildings,
Kusakabe Kimbei (1841-1934) was a colorist and assistant to Felice Beato and Baron Raimond Von Stillfried before opening his own studio in Yokohama, in 1881.
Around 1885, he bought Beato's and Stillfried's negatives. At the end of the 19th century, Kimbei immortalized numerous portraits of Japanese people. The prints, which he hand-colored, were then sold to tourists visiting the country.
