A copy of this photograph is preserved at the Bibliothèque nationale de France (Gallica) and the Musée Carnavalet, among others.
Eugène Atget (1857-1927) was a French photographer famous for documenting old Paris before its transformation. For over thirty years, he captured streets, buildings and scenes of life with an eye that was both documentary and poetic. His work influenced the Surrealists and generations of photographers. Recognized especially after his death, he is today considered a pioneer of modern photography.
