Kusakabe Kimbei, Original Photograph Of A Street Vendor, Japan, Ca. 1880
Artist: Kusakabe Kimbei (1841-1934)
Kusakabe Kimbei, after having been the assistant and colorist of Raimund von Stillfried and Felice Beato, founded his own photographic studio in Yokohama in the early 1880s. A master in the art of staging and watercolor enhancement, he gave his images a chromatic intensity and elegance that seduced Western travelers in search of souvenirs of Japan.
In this studio photograph, a street vendor presents his vegetable production to a young woman.
The care taken in the composition and the finesse of the colorization help to shape an idealized and picturesque vision of Japan.
Albumen print, 26 × 21 cm, mounted on cardboard and enhanced with watercolor, circa 1880. Good condition.
