"Kusakabe Kimbei, Original Photograph Of A Street Vendor, Japan, Ca. 1880"
Kusakabe Kimbei, after having been the assistant and colorist of Raimund von Stillfried and Felice Beato, founded his own photographic studio in Yokohama in the early 1880s. A master in the art of staging and watercolor enhancement, he gave his images a chromatic intensity and elegance that seduced Western travelers in search of souvenirs of Japan.
In this photograph, a street vendor presents his vegetable production to a young woman.
The care taken in the composition and the finesse of the colorization help to shape an idealized and picturesque vision of Japan.
Albumen print, 26 × 21 cm, mounted on cardboard and enhanced with watercolor, circa 1880. Good condition.
