Collection Of Powder Flasks, Africa
This interesting collection of African powder flasks illustrates an ancient craft that combines functionality and aesthetic refinement.
Designed to contain gunpowder during hunting or combat, these objects demonstrate the care and attention paid to everyday objects.
Two rare examples, probably originating from the Congo, are made of calabash finely engraved with geometric patterns. One of them has lost its stopper. Another model, made of brown wood delicately decorated with engravings, could also come from the Congo. Finally, a last piece, attributed to the Baoulé ethnic group of Côte d'Ivoire, seduces by the elegance of its line and the depth of its patina of use. There is an old crack on the stopper.
Africa, early 20th century.
