Bamoun Calabash, Cameroon
An elegant gourd from the Bamoun culture (Cameroon), used to store a woman’s precious belongings.
Made from a naturally blackened gourd, its hollowed-out body is closed by a small square lid, secured to the object by a thin, tied cord.
The neck is pierced to accommodate a hanging cord made of plant fibers, which is now partially preserved. This cord allowed the gourd to be kept safe, suspended inside the dwelling.
This type of feminine container, both utilitarian and personal, is particularly rare. A comparable example, collected by Henri Labouret, is held in the collections of the Musée du quai Branly – Jacques Chirac under inventory number 34.171.219.1-3.
